Accused of trying to kill man with hammer on Cumbrian street

A man has appeared in court accused of attempting to murder another man with a hammer.

John Lowis, 44, of Mill Crest, Shap, made a brief appearance at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that he has been charged on Monday with attempting to murder 52-year-old Russell Mitchell.

The defendant spoke only to confirm his name and address and to indicate that he understood the proceedings.

His defence solicitor Lauren Heasley confirmed that her client did not wish to make an application for bail.

Prosecutor Adrienne Harris said that the allegation involved a claim that the defendant attacked Mr Mitchell in the street with a hammer.

Mr Mitchell is currently undergoing medical treatment in hospital for his injuries.

Magistrates agreed to sent the case to Carlisle Crown court for a preliminary hearing on August 28. Lowis was remanded in custody.
