Caldbeck back on top after Penrith slip up

Penrith II were bowled out for the second successive time this season. Last week they managed to secure the majority for the points but none were forthcoming on this occasion as Scotby won comprehensively and revived their title aspirations.

Caldbeck I had an enjoyable weekend, a league win against Carlisle II moved them to the top of the Premiership, by a single point. Whether this situation is a poisoned chalice is open to question; Braithwaite, the last team to do so, haven’t won since.

Appleby II’s recent run of form continued with a home win over Wigton II, and, with Staffield losing at Cockermouth II, move out of the basement for the first time this season.

Top met bottom in Division One and Gamblesby defied the form by beating Kirkby Stephen. Gamblesby are somewhat of an enigma having only two wins to their credit this season, against the top two sides.

The other win was against Stainton I who replace Kirkby as leaders after overcoming Edenhall, despite struggling against the bowling of Jamie Armstrong. They didn’t manage to reach three figures, but it was more than sufficient as the home side also found scoring runs at a premium.

Stewart Marshall created the pressure with a spell of six consecutive maidens with his brother Jeff and Tom Myerscough benefiting to the tune of four wickets apiece.

A tense conclusion at Nunwick I where Culgaith took the majority of the points as the home side found the equation of ten runs in the final over too much of an obstacle.

Age doesn’t seem to be an obstacle to Peter Henderson after taking four wickets in an extended bowling stint he donned the pads for the second innings, and with Martin Cowley, oversaw a 10-wicket victory for Carleton at Great Corby.

For the second time this season Tony Steele was dismissed in the nineties but his efforts, in part, were responsible for a comfortable Arthuret & Esk win at Appleby III.

In Division Three, as with two divisions above, top met bottom with the same surprising conclusion.

Half of Penrith V’s runs came from the bat of Steve Finney taking the total out of Caldbeck II’s reach. That defeat allowed the two teams below them, Penrith Wanderers and Wigton III, to overtake them.

Wigton’s took seven points at Nunwick II whose last wicket pairing of captain Mark James and Sarah Worsick, stayed around for a point. Cancellations apart, Wigton III have been slowly climbing the table; their last defeat was two months ago.

Irthing Vale were the team responsible and they travelled to Edenhall to play Wanderers. What a difference a day makes. Where Stainton and Edenhall found runs scarce this could not be said for this encounter, amassing nearly four times that amount as Nigel Fowles led the home side to victory and divisional leaders with his third century in four innings.

The junior League Cup semi-finals were finally completed with a representative of both divisions to contest the final this coming weekend. Edenside Academy, who haven’t won a league match in Division Two, finally overcame a spirited Threlkeld side by six wickets.

The other match was the closest contest of the weekend. In a match which saw both sides in control at various stages during the match the home side, Keswick III, finally wrested victory from Wetheral by two wickets when veteran Bill Richardson hit the penultimate ball to the boundary.

In the delayed quarter final of the senior League Cup Scotby defeated a weakened Cockermouth II and will host Nunwick I to find out who will play Caldbeck I in the final.

For the second time over the weekend Stainton I failed to reach three figures, but on this occasion it wasn’t sufficient as Caldbeck I won by seven wickets and go forward to contest the final they so narrowly lost last season.
