Cumbria police warn music festival-goers about use of 'legal highs'

Police chiefs have warned music fans dabbling in what they believe are ‘legal’ highs at this weekend’s Kendal Calling festival that they could face arrest.
Officers patrolling the event near Penrith say some substances people believe are legal have recently been banned.
Other highs might also contain the substances now classed as illegal.
Police say they will be on site at the festival, held on the Lowther Estate from Friday to Sunday, to deter criminals and to make sure traffic flows properly.
They stress they will also look out for drug dealers and users.
North Cumbria’s deputy police chief is overseeing the force’s operation at the festival.
Superintendent Mark Pannone said: “We want to ensure people can enjoy Kendal Calling safely so will be taking a tough stance on the use and supply of illegal drugs.
“This will include newly banned substances such as mephedrone and BZP.
“Unfortunately, many so-called ‘legal highs’ contain these substances. So people may end up unwittingly using a dangerous or illegal substance without realising.
“By using these substances you are risking arrest and risking your health.
“The only safe option is to avoid drugs and ‘legal highs’ altogether.”
Police have highlighted the following substances as among the drugs people should keep clear of:
The chemical solvent GBL, used by clubbers as a substitute for the banned drug GHB. It is a class C drug.
Class C drugs BZP, benzylpiperazine and related piperazines. These are in pills and powders and create a surge of energy but also agitation, headaches and sickness.
Synthetic cannabinoids, which are chemicals sprayed on herbal smoking products. These are class B drugs.
Naphyrone – known as ‘NRG1’. It is also a class B drug.
Users of class C drugs could be jailed for up to two years and dealers jailed for up to 14 years.
Anyone caught with a class B drug faces up to five years in prison.
Police say Kendal Calling is sold out and anyone arriving without a ticket will not be allowed entry.
Fence jumpers will be dealt with as trespassers and prosecuted.
This year’s line-up includes Doves, The Coral, Calvin Harris, British Sea Power, Badly Drawn Boy and Stereo MCs.
