Doves and The Coral to headline Cumbrian music festival
Last updated at 09:16, Friday, 07 May 2010
Indie rockers Doves and The Coral will headline this year’s Kendal Calling music festival, it has been announced.
They will join the likes of Dumfries-born Calvin Harris, local lads Wild Beasts and Sunderland’s The Futureheads for the three-day festival. Around 8,000 revellers are expected at the event in Hackthorpe, near Penrith, this summer.
Anthem generators Doves will top the bill on Saturday night with hits like There Goes The Fear and Pounding, from 2002 album The Last Broadcast. The Manchester band’s hypnotic soundscapes have seen them open for the likes of Coldplay and U2.
Sunday night headliners The Coral will close the festival with their blend of freewheeling guitars and heart-warming Mersey beats. Crowds can look forward to good-time tunes like Dreaming of You, In The Morning and Jacqueline.
Ben Robinson, director of Kendal Calling, said: “We are all ecstatic that we have been able to invite Doves and The Coral onto the fields. It is an honour to be able to put such a quality lineup together – who would have thought just five years ago that acts like that would be playing in the Lakes?
“This is going to be a fantastic weekend that the team and I will never forget.”
Starting on Friday, July 30 the festival will welcome acts including British Sea Power, Badly Drawn Boy, Stereo MCs, Kid British and The King Blues. Many more acts are still to be announced, including the lineups for the Calling Out, Kaylied, Cafe Seren, Holy Quail and Soapbox stages.
Around 1,500 ticket holders will be invited to Lowther Deer Park a day early, for the Freakeasy performance art and theatre mini-festival.
Kendal Calling runs from Friday July 30 to Sunday August 1 at Lowther Deer Park, Hackthorpe, preceded by Freakeasy on Thursday, July 29. Weekend camping tickets cost £85, available from www.kendalcalling.com or call 0844 8889991.
