Hebburn Town 2 Penrith AFC 0: Penrith exited the FA Cup at the first qualifying round stage after a disappointing performance at their Second Division opponents, who have now knocked three Cumbrian sides out of this year’s competition.
The warning signs were out for Penrith, who were missing Robinson, Allison, and Jones through injury, as early as the fifth minute when a cross from the right beat Holland, but hit the crossbar but rebounded off the keeper for a corner.
The visitors were finding it hard to put any pressure on the Hebburn defence and went behind on 28 minutes when Nicky Davidson was caught in possession and the ball was crossed from the right and Liam McBride headed powerfully into the net.
The home side were clearly in the ascendancy and doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time. Davidson played McBride onside and the Hebburn man strode through to score. Penrith were indebted to Holland for keeping them in the game with a couple of smart saves.
Tim Clasper came on as a substitute on the hour and immediately made an impression when he was tripped in the penalty area after a neat turn.
In the absence of the usual penalty-taker, Willy Paul stepped up but fired the spot-kick high, wide and far from handsome.
The Cumbrians rarely threatened Harrison in the home goal after that and Hebburn went close to adding a third shortly before the final whistle.
Penrith: Holland, Paul, N Davidson, Gray, Thornton, Jackson (Roberts70), Ainsworth, G Davidson, Coleman, Murray-Jones (Clasper 60, Gill 85), Elliott
