Red Squirrel Conservation in Cumbria
Last updated at 17:26, Sunday, 20 December 2009
Save our Squirrels project was launched in 2006 by Red Alert North England to provide information and conservation for Red Squirrels.
The main aims of Save our Squirrels are to raise the profile of the red squirrel through working with schools and local communities, create places where red squirrels can be seen in the wild and work with landowners within dedicated red squirrel reserves.
There are now 17 Red Squirrel Reserves in Cumbria, Northumberland, North Yorkshire and North Merseyside, 4 of them in Cumbria. The Reserves provide a stronghold for the red squirrels, they're populated by coniferous woodland and can be defended from any grey squirrel invasions.
Charlotte Widgery is the Save our Squirrels People and Wildlife Officer for Cumbria and North Yorkshire and works alongside Conservation Officer Simon O'Hare in their Lowther office.
Charlotte, 28, recently appeared on BBC 1 Autumn Watch with presenter Kate Humble. Charlotte talked to Kate about conservation of red squirrels, said: “I really enjoyed meeting Kate, she has always been an inspiration for my career. Kate put me at ease right away and I soon forgot about the TV cameras. It’s definitely one of my career highlights and I’m really proud to have done something so high profile for our Red Squirrel Conservation.”
