Man's jaw broken in Penrith street attack, court told

A Penrith man had his jaw fractured during an unprovoked attack by four men.

Ian Nixon, 32, was set upon as he walked into the Castletown area of Penrith in December.

He had realised the men were following him and tried to run away. But they caught up with him then rained down punches and kicks as he lay on the floor shouting for them to stop.

Yesterday, Nigel Burton appeared before Carlisle Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm, without intent.

Burton, 26, of Roper Street, Penrith, is the only one of the gang to have been caught.

Prosecutor Diane Jackson said witnesses to the attack described it as sickening.

No representations were made on Burton’s behalf and the case was sent to Carlisle Crown Court for sentencing.

Burton was remanded in custody until June 24.
