Mum charged after kids found alone in car in Carlisle

A mum has been charged with neglect after her three children were found on their own in a car in soaring heat in Carlisle.

Police said they were called out when the children – aged between two and eight – began sounding the vehicle’s horn in the city centre.

They were removed from the car, which was on Chapel Street, off Lowther Street.

The mother was arrested when she returned to the car, said police.

Police added she had been at a shop in the city centre. The incident happened yesterday at about midday.

A police spokesman said: “The children did not require hospital treatment but were left in a traumatised state.

“A subsequent check of the temperature inside the car was measured at 40 degrees centigrade.”

The woman, whose name has not been disclosed, has been charged with three counts of neglect.

She is due to appear before Carlisle Magistrates Court on Monday.
