Penrith Rugby Club is hosting the day next month and will stage an attempt to break the record for the longest throw, currently 98 metres.

They have teamed up with the Lakes Free Range Egg Company (The Lakes) and their egg brand ‘Laid with Love’.

Organiser Spike Johnson said the egg company had been very supportive and were sourcing the best eggs for the event.

“The eggs have very yellow yolks so any not caught properly will certainly be seen,” he said.

“We are currently working with The Guinness Book of Records to make it an official attempt.”

Mark Gaskin, managing director of The Lakes, said they saw it as a positive and fun way to support the club and encourage people to be fit and active.

“As well as a good diet, exercise and fresh air are very important – for the rugby teams and for our hens,” he said.

“The challenge of throwing and catching an egg longer than a distance of 98 metres is tough, but will be something worth watching on the day and we hope to see lots of people having a go at the record.”

The family fun day will be on August 4 and 5 and raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance and the club. The egg throwing will take place on Sunday. Other events include a 178ft bungee jump, an 800-pound cow roast – which will be filmed by the Hairy Bikers for their next TV series – and a truck pull.
