TOTAL FORWARD 121 prime bulls; 2358 hoggs and 145 ewes;

A large show of 121 prime bulls were forward with the show being mainly Black and White. M/s Cornthwaite of Balgray Farm sold a Limousin bull for 216.5p to West Scottish Lamb. M/s Hewetson of Scales Hall sold a Limousin cross for 215.5p bought by Mr John Little. M/s Rogerson of Maisongill sold the top priced Blonde Bull for 214.5p to Bill Howard. M/s Jackson of Skelton Wood End sold the top priced Black and White bull for 178.5p to Cleveland Meats. Mr Houston of Gretna House Farm sold the top priced Charolais bull for 1095kg 185.5p £2013 to Cleveland Meats.

A good show of prime cattle were forward. Mr Philipson of Glebe Farm sold a British Blue cross bullock for 225.5p to Pioneer Foods. M/s Dodd of West View sold the top priced Limousin cross bullock for 224.5p also to Pioneer Foods. M/s Blaylock & Son of Hall Burn sold a Limousin cross heifer for 217.5p to Pioneer Foods. Mr Alan Irving of Toppin Castle sold the top priced British Blue cross for 739kg 209.5p £1548 to Pioneer Foods.

An entry of 2358 hoggs and 145 ewes were forward. Trade rose 8ppk on the week to level at 219.67ppk with an SQQ of 227.99, showing a marvellous return for all weights and classes, with heavy sheep in particular taking the biggest jump on the week. Top price of the day was paid for a fabulous Texel cross lamb consigned by Miss Alice Harrison of Grange Hall, Gt Asby selling for £126 to Mr Arthur Slack. Top price per kilo was 286.7p paid for a pen of 39kg Beltex lambs from M/s Dempster of Castle Hill selling at £111.80 to Mr Robert Skelton.

Cast ewes topped at £128.50 for a Texel from Mr Dempster of Castlehill, Lockerbie.

TOTAL FORWARD 103 prime cattle, bulls and cows and 2,793 prime sheep including ewes.

Cattle were again the dearest for some time with top price per kilo being 232.5 pence for a Limousin heifer from Thomas Tyson, East House, purchased by John Little. Len Skelton, Low House Farm’s run of heifers averaged 227.5p/kg topping at 230p/kg purchased by John Little. Top price per head was £1,523.96 for a Charolais steer from Mike Park, Millom Castle. Bulls saw Black and Whites averaging 176.77p/kg and a top of 225.5p/kg for a British Blue from Lonning Farm, this was also the top price per head at £1,698.02.

Cast cows saw Black and Whites regularly selling at 150p/kg topping at 154.5 pence from Burton House Farm. Stock bulls sold to 178.5p/kg for a 998kg Limousin from Crakeplace Hall, this was also top price per head at £1,767.15.

Black & White cows topped pre head at £1,309.60 from Ribton House.

Prime hoggs again sold well with an overall average of 203.86 pence per kilo. Top price per head was £128 for a Beltex from Bill Skelton, Rook Farm, purchased by Tony Harrison. Top price per kilo was 296 pence for a pen of Texel’s from Steven Richardson, Craggside Farm. Mules topped at £94.50 from Kelmore Hills; Cast ewes were the dearest of 2012 so far for all classes.

Trade firm for all classes with more commercial type cattle on offer. Sale average 198.7ppk or (354.8pk d/w at 56%).

Prime hoggs a very mixed show for quality sold to a top of 245pk for texel crosses from Mr J Wilson, Moniaive. Top price per head was £100 also for Texels from AT Waugh & Co, Thornhill. Overall average was 206.2pk a rise of 3p on the week.

A larger proportion of plain ewes met a similar trade to recent weeks.

Thursday February 9

TOTAL FORWARD 47 prime cattle, 2 young bulls, 3,682 prime hoggs and 5,425 cast ewes & rams

A larger show of prime cattle saw all classes 5p up on the week and a better show was seen throughout. The sale was topped at 227.5p twice, firstly for an over age Limousin bullock from Messrs Taylor Dashwell Green and also for a fantastic Limousin bullock show by Messrs Nicholson, The Gill. Limousin heifers topped at 226.5p from A. Irving, Toppin Castle and 224.5p shown by Messrs Retson, Gardrum.

A small show of young bulls topped at 172.5p for Black & Whites from T. & M. Irving, Becton Hall.

A smaller show of 3,682 prime hoggs, due to freezing conditions, were forward to a full ring of buyers, with an overall average of 209.2p per kilo obtained. Export weight hoggs regularly between 220p and 240p and short of requirements, heavy hoggs easier sold than of late. Hoggs sold to a top of 270p per kilo for Texels from Cumcrook.

The 904 lightweight hoggs continued to sell at recent high rates.

Another grand show of 5,425 cast ewes & rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with all classes similar on the week. Plain ewes and hill ewes still short of requirements.

Top price on the day was 304.0p/kg, this was realised three times. The first occasion was for two lots of Beltex Hoggs from Messrs R Hall & Sons, Inglewood Edge. A single Beltex hogg from Mr MH Elliot, Espland House shortly followed. This hogg was also the top price per head on the day, reaching £124.50, these hoggs were all purchased by Vivers Scotlamb Ltd.

TOTAL FORWARD 171 Cattle including 34 Bulls, and 1025 Prime Sheep including 47 Ewes.

A similar number forward but despite quality being reduced week on week trade producing a 4-5p rise and live returns again pleasing vendors. .

Black and White Bulls the trade of the day regularly selling in excess of 165p per kg to a top of 181.5p from J Dixon & Son, Lesson Hall.

Top price for heifers was 231.5p paid twice. Once for a Limousin Heifer shown by JG & M Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton. Also, for a Bazadaise Heifer shown by D.A Harrison, The Old Vicarage, Westnewton, this beast also made the top price per head for heifers of £1488.55.

The top price of 229.5p per kg was paid for a Limousin Steer shown by Messrs Ashburner Ltd, High House, Sandwith, Whitehaven. A Limousin Steer shown by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Bothel made the top price per head for steers of £1632.41.

The top price of 224.5p per kg was paid for a Limousin Bull shown by D.A Harrison, Westnewton. The top price per head for bulls was £1793.32 for a Limousin Bull shown by DG & JA Bell, Low Blaithwaite, Wigton, which was the top gross price of the day.

Over Thirty Months cattle sold to 214.5p per kg paid for an Aberdeen Angus Heifer shown by RJ & JM Tudhope, High Parson Bridge, Wigton.

A large entry of sheep and a strong trade throughout with all classes apart from fat being required. The top hoggs again taking the headlines with plenty over 300p to a top of 350p. Lots of hoggs £120 plus. Heavy weights better to sell.

A top price of £147 was paid for a Texel Hogg shown by Jacob Stoddart of Hillside Farm, Wigton and was purchased by David Paisley, Wigton, which also made the top price per kg of 350p.
