Striker Nicholson back to boost the Reds

Tony Nicholson has given Workington Reds an end-of-season boost by returning to first team action.
The speedy striker turned his back on Blue Square North before the season started and has been playing in the Tesco Cumberland County League and Workington Sunday League.
But manager Darren Edmondson hadn’t forgotten the promise he showed in his debut season last year and has invited him back to Borough Park.
Edmondson said: “Tony has been training with us and had a couple of outings with the reserves in the Lancashire League.
“I brought him into the squad for the game at Southport when Matthew Berkeley dropped out with injury and he got five minutes at the end.
“He’s a young player with potential who impressed a lot of people at the club last season. His pace is a great asset and I’m happy to give him a chance to settle back into the squad and see how things go.”
Nicholson scored some spectacular goals for the Reds last season before suffering a couple of injury set-backs. It as a surprise, though, before the start of the current campaign when he opted to play for Cockermouth and Dearham instead of the Reds.
With Berkeley having to drop-out with a foot injury, Nicholson was included as a sub at Southport where Reds got a thoroughly deserved point from a 1-1 draw.
Edmondson said: “I think the lads should have been very disappointed that they didn’t get all three points because we were the better side for a long time.
“I’m just upset about the goal we conceded. It was another one which we should have defended better.
“Overall, though, I thought we did well and against a side pushing for a promotion play-off place it was a very good effort. It also stretches our unbeaten run to four games and that’s something I want to see us build on between now and the end of the season.”
Workington have re-arranged their home game with Alfreton Town for Tuesday, April 1 – bringing it forward because their opponents are involved in a Derbyshire County Cup game on the original date of April 22.
Reds entertain Worcester on Saturday and will now follow-up against Alfreton before travelling to Hyde United on April 5.
Workington Reds Supporters Club’s annual general meeting is to be held in the Borough Park Social Club on Wednesday, April 16 starting at 8pm.
