Wigton's title charge falters against Egremont

Wigton failed to make any massive headway in the race for the North Lancs Division One title – as they could not bowl out lowly Egremont when the two sides met on Saturday.
Wigton lost their promotion place last weekend, when they were beaten by league leaders Duddon SC and Appleby Eden and Lindal Moor leapfrogged over them – but they had a great chance on Saturday to claw back some points.
Their clash with Egremont was the only game in the division to reach a conclusion, with all other clubs having to settle for nine points apiece because of the rain.
And they did enough to leap back ahead of Lindal Moor into third but could not reach Appleby.
Wigton had batted first and declared on 221-3 with Bobby Sherlock unbeaten on 83 and Nick Watt on 50. Egremont were never up to the pace but they hung on to their wickets and closed on 111-6, Ian Littleton top scoring with 35 as Mike Holliday tried his best with the ball in hand, claiming 4-10.
The only other game in division one that got under way was between Appleby and Workington II but it was halted through the weather with Workington all out for 121, Ian Batty hitting 41 of those.
In the premier division, Cockermouth put a spanner in Workington’s hopes of rejoining the title race by beating them by three wickets.
Firstly they bowled Workington out for 171, then went on to make 174-7 in reply to clinch the win.
Whitehaven claimed a 39 runs victory over former pacesetters Penrith after bowling the north Cumbrians out for 158 when they were chasing Whitehaven’s total of 197.
Carlisle drew their match with Haverigg after posting 181-4, professional Saliya Saman unbeaten on 71 for them. Haverigg were then 130-7 at the close of play, despite Lee Readitt claiming 3-39.
Kirkby v Cleator and Millom v Furness were both called off due to the rain while Keswick had put on 67-2 against Vickerstown when rain also stopped play there.
